San Francisco 49ers (-7) @ Arizona Cardinals (+8) Monday, Oct. 29, 2012 8:30 p.m. ET

As one of the most surprising teams in the NFL this season, the Arizona Cardinals started the year with a four-game win streak and promising outlook. Even though quarterback Kevin Kolb still didn’t appear to be the answer for this team, Arizona was winning football games with a legitimate shot of winning the NFC West division title. Unfortunately, starting the season with four straight wins may have been the fluke that everyone anticipated it would be. After the first loss of the year to the division rival St. Louis Rams (17-3) in Week 5, the Cardinals couldn’t get back on track and now head into Week 8 with three consecutive losses after falling to Buffalo Bills (19-16 OT) and Minnesota Vikings (21-14).[sportsbooktable3] The losing streak couldn’t come at a worse time for Arizona as this team that was once thought to be on the rise will face arguably their toughest test of the season against the division rival San Francisco 49ers. Even though the 49ers are clearly the better all-around football team with the best defense in the NFL leading the way, San Francisco needs this win over Arizona in order to secure the top spot in the division. With a win for the Cardinals in Week 8, the division standings will shift with Arizona leaping to first place ahead of San Francisco. That being said, this game is extremely important for both teams and as it is a must-win situation that could very well dictate the outcome of the division. The 49ers are still feeling the after effects of being humiliated on their home field by the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants a few weeks ago. The best defense in the league gave up 26 points to the New York Giants while only putting up three points of their own. The loss was devastating and an indication that San Francisco can still be inconsistent on both sides of the football. In Week 7, San Francisco played another divisional game against the Seattle Seahawks. It was two dominant defenses going up against one another and the 49ers came out on top, but barley. The offensive struggles continued with San Francisco only scoring 13 points in the win. In order for this team to continue playing at a high level and control their own fate in terms of clinching a playoff spot, the 49ers will need to come out on top in Week 8 with a convincing win over the Cardinals. At this point in time, the Cardinals have been dubbed the underdogs in the point spread at +7. This is a fairly high spread for San Francisco to cover with the recent offensive struggles, but I believe the 49ers will bounce back with a vengeance.

Prediction: 49ers -7
