Carolina Panthers (+9) @ Chicago Bears (-9) Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 1 p.m. ET

After an impressive rookie season that exceeded everyone’s expectations, former first overall pick Cam Newton was thought to have a promising career in the NFL while turning around the lowly Carolina Panthers franchise. Even though the Panthers failed to make the playoffs last season, the consensus was that this team was on the rise and might challenge the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints for the NFC South division title. Unfortunately, Newton and company have failed to live up to expectations in the second season of the up-and-coming quarterback’s career. After the first six games of the 2012 NFL season, Carolina is sitting at 1-5 on the year and dead last in the division standings. With the Falcons currently undefeated and Saints seemingly starting to turn things around, there’s no question that the Panthers are out of the running for the division title. That being said, the only hope for Newton’s squad in terms of the playoffs is the NFC Wildcard and every game from here on out will be a must-win situation with many other playoff-caliber teams in the NFC also shooting for those two spots in the postseason. Although the season isn’t a total loss just yet for Carolina, things won’t get any easier in Week 8 going head-to-head against the first place Chicago Bears. Over the past few years, the Bears have been arguably one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL with a lot of talent on both sides of the football, but an inability to put it all together. One of the main reasons for the Bears’ struggles has been the lack of protection for quarterback Jay Cutler. With Cutler constantly on the ground, the Bears’ offense wasn’t able to reach its full potential until this season with things starting to come together for Chicago. The addition of Pro Bowl wideout Brandon Marshall has been huge for this team’s success as they’ve paved the way to an impressive 5-1 record, first place standing in the NFC North and a flawless showing at Soldier field at 3-0. Needless to say, the Panthers will have their work cut out for them this week by trying to score against the stingy Bears’ defense and trying to contain the potent offense of Chicago. It comes as no surprise that the Bears have been given the edge in this Week 8 matchup with a -9 point spread. A fairly large spread here, but one that should be considered a good bet with the Bears flawless at home and on a roll with a four-game win streak.

Prediction: Bears -9
